Celebrating 50 Years of Growth, Impact, and Leadership in Horticulture

FPEAK is proud to mark its 50th anniversary, celebrating five decades of dedicated service to Kenya’s horticulture sector. Speaking during the commemorations, FPEAK CEO Hosea Machuki reflected on the association’s journey since its formation in 1975, emphasizing its founding mission: to amplify the voice of growers and exporters and coordinate the production of fresh produce for global markets.

“The horticulture industry now contributes an estimated KSh 150 billion annually to the national economy,” noted Mr. Machuki. “This achievement underscores the critical role of continued collaboration with the government, development partners, and private stakeholders to sustain and grow this contribution.”

Over the years, FPEAK has grown into a pivotal institution in Kenya’s horticulture landscape. The association has been instrumental in the development of internationally recognized production and export standards, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s, and continues to influence key national policy and regulatory platforms. FPEAK currently chairs the Executive Committee of the Kenya Standard 1758, leads the National Minor Crops Technical Working Group, and is an active member of the National Trade Facilitation Committee, among others.

In his remarks, Mr. Machuki highlighted the association’s continued advocacy for a conducive business environment. “We are constantly pushing for reforms in areas such as taxation, infrastructure, market access, and support for SMEs,” he said. “We stand with the next generation—youth and women entrepreneurs—just as the founders of FPEAK did in 1975.”

Looking ahead, he noted that with the right policies and support, the sector could more than double its earnings to over KSh 300 billion annually, while also creating thousands of jobs across the value chain.

As the association reviews its current five-year strategic plan, which runs through 2025, one of the core priorities is market diversification. While Europe and the UK remain central markets, FPEAK is actively exploring opportunities in Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas to reduce dependency and tap into new demand.

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, FPEAK recognized and awarded outstanding companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence and commitment to the sector’s growth. The association also reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability, championing practices that balance economic growth, environmental responsibility, and social equity.

“Sustainability is central to our competitiveness,” Machuki said. “Our members are implementing responsible practices that reflect the three pillars of sustainability, ensuring we remain relevant in a rapidly evolving global market.”
